The quality of recent adaptations of the novels of Elmore Leonard leaves me thinking that this guy really knows how to write a book. I haven't bothered to confirm that yet, but when I think back on Out of Sight and Jackie Brown, I'm just in awe. His command of dialogue breathes life into fantastic characters.
Actually, it's ironic that I'd say "think back" on Out of Sight and Jackie Brown, both of which were made a few years after Get Shorty. Both of them were still somewhat fresher in my mind than the first time I saw Get Shorty when renting it to watch this time.
Chili Palmer is a great role for John Travolta. Travolta gets to play his character as very straight among a much zanier bunch including Dennis Farina, Delroy Lindo, Danny DeVito, and Gene Hackman. Nonchalance substituting as a sign of intensity is a hilarious concept, and Travolta has no difficulty pulling it off.
