It is tempting, in writing this review, to invoke the historic fallacy. That is, to criticize something for not being better than that which followed it. As good as Naked Gun is, it can't compare to Naked Gun 2 1/2. I'll do my best to not draw comparisons.
The team of David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker is near and dear to my heart. They put cartoony characters in silly situations and make the audience laugh. The Queen of England is a somewhat unreal person to us common folk. Now imagine seeing the Queen at a baseball game and her treatment of the customs of the game and the ballpark. If you've got that, and it made you laugh, then you're ready for Naked Gun.
Leslie Nielsen and Priscilla Presley start their rocky romance here. She plays the assistant to the villain, and he plays the cop trying to avenge the (alleged, as you'll see) brutal beating of a fellow cop, played by a pre-trial O.J. Simpson. Ricardo Montalban is cold and ruthless as the incarnation of evil. This role even makes references to his work in Wrath of Khan.
Brace yourself for the sight gags, as they are plentiful. You might be in pain leaving the theater, but I'll bet it'll be from laughing at the onslaught of lunacy.
