Bruce Willis's abilities as an undercover action hero had already been well- established by Die Hard and Die Hard 2 when Hudson Hawk came out. It did not help his reputation. The funny lines in those movies worked because they were played straight. Here, we have too much explicit silliness with Willis smirking instead of panicking.
I seem to remember there being exactly one good bit in the entirety of this movie: using songs as timers. The Willis character and the Danny Aiello character sing through songs to keep a precise notion of time during their escapades. The unlikely association of the songs, primarily big band swing numbers, to the crimes is rather amusing.
