The last time I was this bored watching a movie, I gave up after only forty-five minutes. That movie was Soylent Green. I knew the ending already, so quitting was easy. A Boy and His Dog had been recommended by a friend who had watched in the previous few days, so I knew it wasn't a case of loved-it-then, hate-it-now syndrome. I found out why he wanted me to see it after slogging through about an hour: a barbershop quartet. I couldn't identify them under the makeup, and the song was overpowered by a Sousa march. That was a waste of time! This early Don Johnson vehicle is supposedly something of a cult classic, but I found little redeeming value, even though the banter between boy and dog is moderately amusing. Writer-director L.Q. Jones didn't direct any features after this, and I don't blame him.
