Penn Rant

I walked away from Hurlyburly with one main thing: Sean Penn can rant. I'm reminded of some of his antics back when he was still married to Madonna. Beyond that, the movie is largely uninteresting, with little plot and characters that don't make sense unless you're intimately familiar with the entertainment business. In an early scene, Penn and Kevin Spacey sit at facing desks in an office. I sensed that I was expected to recognize what kind of business they worked for, but I couldn't. Maybe their precise occupation isn't important to the movie, but I felt lost, and so I walk away with the knowledge that Sean Penn can rant. My loss.

DVD Comments

Typically, when I put a DVD in, I try to check all of its features. Frankly, Hurlyburly didn't interest me enough to make me try either of the two commentary tracks, usually one of my favorite features of a disc. The thing that I found most interesting was the scene selection menus. Rather than showing several small stills, only one large still is shown, and every movement to another scene changes the still. Even cooler, pressing "menu" during the movie returns to the scene selection menu with the currently playing scene already selected. That's a neat touch.
