That License Plate Movie

THX 1138 is George Lucas's debut. It shows, in both the best and worst senses. Lucas gives us a scary, but not impossible future to worry about, where the absence of required drugs from your system is a punishable offense. Lucas saves some of the most biting sarcasm for religion, as embodied by a Christ- like figure to whose picture people pray while listening to pre- recorded platitudes. The writing definitely upstages the acting, despite high profile names like Robert Duvall and Donald Pleasance. Of course, Lucas isn't known so much for his characters, so their sedated nothingness here is a perfect match!
