Long Start

Star Trek: Insurrection is very slow at revealing its plot. We spend some time watching Data wig out with no explanation. I consider it a major flaw to start a Star Trek movie by taking a beloved character and making them evil without showing some kind of conversion. Sure, I'll accept that Data is an android, and therefore prone to occasionally odd behavior, but Brent Spiner has worked his tail off making that character great and I was immediately put off by seeing that tampered with.

Sullen

For as wonderful as the little village is, Donna Murphy never makes Anij look happy. Her constantly-pained expression served her well when she was an accused axe-murderer on "Ally McBeal", but here she casts a nasty cloud over the supposed paradise on the planet. Maybe the casting decision was swayed by a desire to pick someone who would convey wisdom, but I think they went a hair too far.

Number Theory

Jonathan Frakes said in an interview that he wouldn't want to direct an odd- numbered Star Trek movie. I thought he worked wonders in First Contact, so I was hopeful here. Maybe he set the bar too high, or maybe it's just the curse of the odds.

DVD Comments

Insurrection's DVD is more interesting in what is missing than what it contains. There are no subtitle tracks on the disc at all. I consider same-language subtitles to be a bare minimum requirement for all DVDs, and am disappointed any time it's not there. The behind- the-scenes featurette serves mostly as an advertisement for the movie, but does give a few hints to the interesting aspects of the production. Teaser and theatrical trailers are both present.
