Hot Shots is the product of the wild imaginations of Pat Proft and Jim Abrahams. Abrahams is one third of the team responsible for great comedies like Airplane!, Naked Gun, Naked Gun 2 1/2, and Top Secret! Funny though it is, Hot Shots can't compare with any of those. Charlie Sheen can certainly squint with the best of them, but he doesn't make as strong a central character as Leslie Nielsen's Frank Drebin. Efrem Zimbalist Jr. is the closest thing to an antagonist, and he can't hope to beat out the classy Ricardo Montalban or the slick Bob Goulet. Lloyd Bridges gets most of the best moments, largely with jokes about the replacement of most of his body after various battles.

Candid Cameo

Several actors in Hot Shots! weren't particularly well known at the time but have gone on to greater fame. William O'Leary played "Dead Meat" here and went on to be Tim Allen's brother in "Home Improvement". Mrs. Dead Meat was played by Heidi Swedberg, who did a few seasons on "Seinfeld" as George's fiancée Susan. Ryan Stiles, "Mailman" Farnham, is now a regular on both "The Drew Carey Show" and "Whose Line Is It Anyway?".
