Delivering on Promises

The Great Muppet Caper has a title that promises adventure and excitement. Amazingly enough, the movie delivers. The second of the Muppets' feature-length films, Great Muppet Caper sends everyone to England for a delicious blend of comedy, romance, and action. The plot contrivances are hilarious, and the musical numbers are something to behold.

Meet Cute

I find it terrifically amusing that as Great Muppet Caper begins, Kermit and Piggie haven't met yet. They certainly met in The Muppet Movie but don't acknowledge it here. The confusion of an innocent frog walking into the office of a London designer is understandable.

Fourth Wall

Some of the best material in the movie comes from the characters' awareness of their presence in a movie. When Kermit chastises Piggy for overacting, it's great. It's funny to hear Diana Rigg and Peter Ustinov toss around words like "cameo" and "exposition." My other favorite bit is watching John Cleese and Joan Sanderson labor through dinner.
