I thought I was in for an interesting ride when Girl, Interrupted started. The opening minutes include great cuts between a dream state and reality. Hey, who doesn't get excited about the possibility of a filmmaking technique that gives the audience a healthy dose of how the character feels? When the character is supposed to be insane, how can you go wrong? Unfortunately, the movie is very quickly through with finding insight into its main character because it is too busy trying to make another character more interesting. I have no complaints about the performances by Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie, but the story doesn't use them well. Even knowing that the movie is based on the real-life experiences of Susanna Kaysen can't keep me from feeling that Jolie's character is a sorry excuse for a Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Soundtrack, Interrupted

I saw Girl, Interrupted in a theater, and there were a few stretches near the beginning of the movie when I heard pops and skips on the soundtrack. The audio never seemed to go out of sync, so it didn't look like a problem with a non-film based medium. It even seemed like a clever way to represent Susanna's perception of the world, but I couldn't tell if it was part of the movie or a flaw in the theater's wiring. If you've seen the movie, please let me know if you've experienced the same thing.
