Lost in the Translation

I love "Mr. Bean", the TV show without which we would not have Bean. The humor is very quiet, and Rowan Atkinson's physical comedy is allowed to dominate the senses. Bean, subtitled "The Ultimate Disaster Movie" panders too much to American tastes. The score (by Howard Goodall) is too loud and jarring to match the humor. The other characters, most notably Peter MacNicol ("The Biscuit" for all you "Ally McBeal" fans), also serve more to distract from Atkinson rather than to set him up well. Bean just isn't a character that was ever meant to do dialog! The speech that Bean eventually delivers is worth the price of admission, though.
